In today's fast-paced world, accessing quality health care should be convenient and accessible. That's why I am pleased to offer virtual appointments for families across Alberta, bringing naturopathic care directly to you. My goal is to make integrative, holistic pediatric care available to everyone, even from the comfort of your home.

My Clinical Areas of Focus

icons modalities v2-07.png
Digestive Concerns

Digestive complaints, such as constipation, diarrhea, abdominal pain, gas, bloating, reflux, and/or heartburn, are among the most common concerns in my pediatric patients. These symptoms can range from mild discomfort to severe issues and often indicate underlying problems. It's crucial to investigate and address potential causes such as imbalances in gut flora, food sensitivities or intolerances, allergies, poor nutrition, or links to mental health concerns. I utilize a comprehensive approach, which can include dietary adjustments, probiotics, natural remedies, and/or lifestyle changes to address the root cause and restore healthy digestion. Additionally, I focus on educating parents about the importance of gut health and how it impacts their child's overall health.

icons modalities v2-08.png
Iron Deficiency

Optimizing iron levels in children is crucial for their growth, cognitive development, and overall energy levels. Iron deficiency in children is common, often caused by inadequate dietary intake, rapid growth phases, and/or absorption issues. Diagnosing iron deficiency can be challenging through symptoms alone because symptoms in children can be subtle and may overlap with other common childhood complaints. In addition, some children may show no symptoms at all. Therefore, I recommend screening for iron deficiency in all my pediatric patients. My approach to treatment includes education, an evidence-informed supplementation strategy, bloodwork monitoring, and follow-ups to ensure optimal levels are maintained.

Mental Health

Children's mental and emotional health is crucial for their overall development. I provide support for issues such as anxiety, stress, depression, ADHD, and mood disorders through a comprehensive approach that includes nutritional guidance, lifestyle modifications, and natural remedies. Nutrition plays a significant role in brain function and mood regulation, while lifestyle changes, such as incorporating regular physical activity and establishing healthy sleep routines, can greatly benefit mental health. Additionally, I utilize natural remedies, such as supplements and herbal medicine, and mindfulness techniques, to support emotional balance. My goal is to foster a balanced and healthy mental state for your child, ensuring they have the tools and support needed to thrive emotionally and psychologically.

Immune Health

A strong immune system is vital for preventing illness and supporting overall health and well-being. Various factors can influence immune health in children, including genetics, nutrition, environmental exposures, stress levels, sleep quality, and lifestyle habits. Common concerns I address include recurrent illnesses, ear infections, urinary tract infections, allergies, food sensitivities or intolerances, and autoimmune conditions. I also consult with parents who want to support their child’s immune health through the cold and flu season. My strategies in supporting children’s immune function include dietary advice, supplements, and lifestyle changes. For specific concerns, additional testing can be very helpful to tailor the best approach. I aim to enhance your child's natural defenses, ensuring they remain healthy and resilient year-round.

icons modalities v2-11.png
Skin Concerns

Skin conditions like eczema, psoriasis, acne, and rashes can be distressing for children and are often caused by underlying factors such as allergies, food sensitivities or intolerances, poor digestive health, nutritional deficiencies, or environmental triggers. Accurate diagnosis is crucial, so I take a thorough intake and evaluate the affected area through photo documentation. For certain concerns, additional testing can help identify exacerbating or contributing factors. Treatment plans typically include dietary adjustments, lifestyle recommendations, supplements, and/or topical applications. Skin concerns usually take time to improve, making regular follow-ups important to monitor progress and adjust the treatment as needed. My goal is to provide effective, holistic care that addresses the root causes of skin issues and promotes long-term health and comfort for your child.

icons modalities v2-12.png
Sleep Difficulties

Quality sleep is essential for a child’s growth and development, and sleep issues can significantly impact a child's mood, behaviour, and cognitive function. I address sleep difficulties by identifying potential causes such as stress, anxiety, poor sleep hygiene, suboptimal sleep environment, inactivity, nutritional imbalances, or medication use. In certain cases, additional testing may be helpful. Recommendations may include lifestyle changes, dietary guidance, supplements, herbal medicine, and/or relaxation techniques. My goal is to help your child develop healthy sleep habits that contribute to their overall well-being and development.

Comprehensive Health Assessment
icons modalities v2-22.png

My comprehensive health assessment involves a 75 to 90 minute initial appointment where I take a detailed intake of your child's health history, current concerns, lifestyle factors, health goals, and review any previous testing. This comprehensive approach is the foundation for me understanding your child's unique health needs, investigating underlying causes, and developing a personalized care plan.

Laboratory Testing
icons modalities v2-03.png

I offer laboratory testing services through Alberta Precision Laboratories (APL) to gain deeper insights into your child’s health concerns. With APL's widespread presence across Alberta, scheduling and access to testing locations are made convenient for you. Alternatively, I can collaborate with your family doctor or other health-care professional to request laboratory testing. I understand the potential stress associated with blood draws for children, and I prioritize their comfort and well-being, recommending such tests only when absolutely necessary for your child's health assessment.

Functional Testing
icons modalities v2-27.png

I provide an extensive range of functional testing options through reputable laboratories such as Diagnostic Solutions, Doctor’s Data, Rocky Mountain Analytical, US BioTek, Mosaic Diagnostics, and Genova Diagnostics. These tests encompass a variety of assessments, including the GI MAP, comprehensive stool analysis, candida testing, comprehensive allergy testing, organic acid testing, and food sensitivity testing. While functional testing can offer valuable insights into your child’s health, it's important to note that these tests can be costly. Therefore, I carefully evaluate each case to ensure that the tests recommended will provide meaningful information that guides our treatment approach effectively.

Lifestyle Counseling
icons modalities v2-29.png

I am passionate about lifestyle counseling as it lays the groundwork for cultivating positive habits and long-term health outcomes for your child. From nutrition and exercise to stress management and sleep hygiene, I support you in creating a nurturing environment for your child. Together, we create a personalized plan that aligns with your family's unique needs, preferences, and busy schedule to ensure recommendations are sustainable and practical to implement into your daily life. I understand that meaningful change takes time and dedication, and I approach lifestyle counseling with patience and support.

Clinical Nutrition
icons modalities v2-28.png

My approach to nutrition integrates evidence-based dietary recommendations, focusing on addressing deficiencies, supporting healthy growth, and enhancing overall well-being without promoting restrictive eating habits. I understand the importance of fostering a positive relationship with food in children, which is why I avoid overly restrictive dietary approaches unless medically necessary. Instead, I emphasize balanced nutrition, mindful eating habits, and a variety of wholesome foods to promote optimal health. Should you need further support with diet-related aspects such as recipes, meal plans, or specific nutritional guidance, I can recommend reputable registered dieticians or holistic nutritionists.

Supplements
icons modalities v2-25.png

My approach to supplements is rooted in personalized care and evidence-based research. I believe in a less-is-more philosophy, carefully recommending supplements only when necessary and beneficial for your child's health. Each recommendation is tailored to your child's specific needs and health concerns. I prioritize high-quality supplements prescribed through Fullscript, an online dispensary delivering professional-grade products to your door for convenience and authenticity.

Herbal Medicine
icons modalities v2-26.png

Harnessing the power of nature, herbal medicine taps into the healing properties of medicinal plants to support your child's well-being. These plants contain a myriad of active compounds that can address a wide range of health concerns and restore harmony to the body's natural processes. I recommend herbal medicine in various forms such as tinctures, syrups, teas, capsules, powders, creams, and salves. From immune-boosting to calming herbs, I leverage the healing properties of plants to address a range of health concerns and enhance well-being.

Homeopathy
icons modalities v2-23.png

Homeopathy is a gentle and safe healing method that involves using highly diluted substances to stimulate the body's innate ability to heal itself. It is a traditional practice that has been around for hundreds of years and can address a wide range of health concerns. One of the hallmarks of homeopathy is its exceptional safety profile, making it suitable for children of all ages. While I value the benefits of homeopathy, I typically recommend it in conjunction with other treatment modalities to provide comprehensive care for your child. This integrative approach ensures that your child receives the best possible care, balancing the strengths of different therapeutic options for optimal outcomes.

This is particularly beneficial for families with busy schedules or those living in remote areas.

Cost-Effective

Virtual care can reduce costs associated with travel and time off work. Additionally, it allows for more efficient use of your time as appointments can be scheduled around your family's activities.

What to Expect from Our
Virtual Appointments

Comprehensive Initial Consultation
Lav icon 2_edited.png

Your child's first appointment will be 75 to 90 minutes in length and involves a thorough and detailed intake where we discuss their health history, current concerns, lifestyle factors, health goals, and review any previous testing. This comprehensive approach allows me to better understand the root causes of health issues and tailor a personalized treatment plan.

Customized Treatment Plans
Lav icon 1_edited.png

Based on the initial consultation, I will create a treatment plan that is specifically designed to address your child's unique needs. This may include nutritional guidance, lifestyle recommendations, and/or natural therapies such as supplements, herbal medicine, and/or homeopathy. If I recommend further investigation with bloodwork or functional testing, we will discuss this as well.

Follow-Up Visits
Lav icon 3_edited.png

Regular follow-up appointments are crucial in monitoring your child's progress. These sessions provide an opportunity to evaluate the effectiveness of their treatment plan, review bloodwork and other testing results, discuss any new concerns, and make any necessary adjustments to their plan. Although every case is different, I generally recommend a 30 or 45 minute follow-up visit every 4-8 weeks. As your child’s health concerns improve, our follow-up appointments become less frequent. I recommend follow-ups every 6 months to 1 year if your child has no current health concerns to address, but you want to support their overall health.

Collaborative Care

  • What is naturopathic medicine?
Naturopathic medicine is a holistic approach to health care that combines modern scientific knowledge with traditional and natural forms of medicine. It focuses on treating the root cause of illness, rather than just the symptoms, by supporting the body's innate ability to heal. Naturopathic doctors (NDs) use a variety of modalities, including clinical nutrition, herbal medicine, lifestyle counseling, traditional Chinese medicine, acupuncture, supplementation, hydrotherapy, and homeopathy to promote optimal health and prevent disease. Naturopathic medicine has 6 core principles: First, Do No Harm: Employ the most natural, least invasive, and least toxic therapies. The Healing Power of Nature: Trust in the body’s inherent wisdom to heal itself. Identify and Treat the Causes: Look beyond symptoms to address the underlying cause of illness. Doctor as Teacher: Educate patients and parents on achieving and maintaining health. Treat the Whole Person: Consider the body as an integrated whole in all its physical, emotional, and spiritual dimensions. Prevention: Focus on overall health, wellness, and disease prevention.
  • How are naturopathic doctors trained and licensed?
Naturopathic doctors complete a rigorous training program after a requirement of at least three years of undergraduate postsecondary education. Naturopathic education includes a four-year, graduate-level program at an accredited naturopathic medical school, which includes over 4,500 hours of classroom training in basic medical sciences, clinical sciences, and naturopathic therapies as well as 1500 hours of supervised clinical experience. Naturopathic medical schools in North America are accredited by the Council of Naturopathic Medical Education (CNME): https://cnme.org/. Graduates from a CNME-accredited naturopathic medical program receive a Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine degree. In order to receive the ND designation and practice naturopathic medicine, graduates are required to pass standardized board exams to become licensed and regulated in jurisdictions that recognize naturopathic medicine. In Alberta, naturopathic doctors are regulated by the College of Naturopathic Doctors of Alberta: https://www.cnda.net/. Being registered with a regulatory body ensures that naturopathic doctors possess the necessary knowledge, skills, and judgment to provide safe and effective care for patients.
  • How are naturopathic doctors different from medical doctors?
While both naturopathic doctors (NDs) and medical doctors (MDs) are trained in diagnosing and treating medical conditions, their approaches differ significantly. NDs focus on holistic and preventive care, using natural therapies and lifestyle modifications to address the root causes of health issues. MDs typically emphasize acute and emergency care, often using pharmaceutical and surgical interventions. Both professions can complement each other when working collaboratively for patient care.
  • Do you work with other health care providers?
Yes, I believe in a collaborative approach to health care. I regularly work with other health care providers, including medical doctors, nurse practitioners, and allied health professionals, to ensure comprehensive and coordinated care for your child. This collaboration allows us to integrate the best of both conventional and naturopathic medicine to support your child's health.
  • Is naturopathic medicine covered by insurance?
Naturopathic services are not covered by the Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan (AHCIP), but are covered by most extended health insurance plans. If your plan does not cover naturopathic medicine, naturopathic services may qualify for coverage under your health spending account. Please contact your employer or insurance provider to understand the specifics of your naturopathic coverage prior to booking an appointment. Juniper Naturopathic Clinic offers direct billing to most insurance companies.
